WhelanWELCOME TO MRS. WHELAN'S WEBPAGE!
I'm excited to spend another school year as part of the second grade team at Mendota!  During my career I have taught first grade, second grade, third grade and sixth grade.  I am a flexible, experienced teacher who has consistently high expectations for students and myself.  My goal for students is that they be enthusiastic, self-directed learners.  I have fun with my students, and we work hard.  Second graders love learning!

I live in Eagan with my husband.  My daughter is a pharmacist in the Twin Cities. Our family enjoys golf outings, playing board games, team trivia contests and our annual trips to Disney World.

Mendota Elementary is an incredible community school! I am proud of my colleagues and the important work we do with children.  The easiest way to reach me is usually by e-mail.

WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE!!!

Thanks for attending October conferences.  Please let me know if there's anything you forgot to ask about.  The last day of Quarter 1 is November 8.  Encourage your child to end the quarter strong with independent reading and math thinking.

This week we are writing about friends -- peers, adults, family members, neighbors, little kids, big kids,  teammates, classmates, pets, imaginary friends, toys etc.  This group is quite good about getting their thoughts down on paper.

We continue to work at  developing stamina for math, reading and writing.

Thanks for your support from home!!!
SECOND GRADE ROCKS!

SPELLING LISTS: Weekly spelling lists may be viewed on Mendota's Second Grade Website.  If your child uses Spelling City at home, remind him/her to go to Mendota’s “Second Grade” lists at

BIOGRAPHIES/ANIMAL BOOKS:
Students love learning about animals and are intrigued with learning about noteworthy people too.  Remember to include biographies and animal books in the nonfiction mix when you read to/with your child at home.  Both genres are rich in vocabulary.  Our school has purchased access to a wonderful research site called PebbleGo.  Students can read and listen to information on animals and people.
